A sad day for drawing in Philadelphia.
Tony Auth, the great editorial cartoonist, died over the weekend. He was at the Philadephia Inquirer for years, then later at the NPR station WHYY's site Newsworks.org.
The sadder part is that his papers might end up at his alma mater, UCLA, instead of staying in Philadelphia. Temple University said they'll house the vast archive of his papers if someone else will pay for it. A ringing and heartfelt endorsement, by Temple standards.
But also sad -- and a weird coincidence on the timing -- the Maurice Sendak collection at the Rosenbach Museum is departing for a new Sendak Museum at his old house in Connecticut, where Philadelphians will never see it again.
